Records are not available for Brian’s early days of umpiring. But in his later days he was known as the King of Clare Street. He lived in Bedford Street, just fifty metres from Clare Street Ground. Known as a steady umpire he officiated at many second and third grade matches at his home oval. New Town Club was usually the home side there.
His trait was to appear on the ground at about the time players took the field to commence the game. Captains had to organise pitching the stumps, checking the boundary, exchanging team sheets (if that was done in the 1950’s and 60’s), toss and get the game ready to start. In those days lower grades were lucky to get one umpire, much less expecting two. Although tea break was only 15 minutes in those days, Brian would slip home for afternoon tea with his family.
