Craig played his early cricket with the Waverley Club in Sydney, opening the innings in the Sydney Cricket Association's (SCA) Under 16 A.W.Green Shield competition with Alan Turner, who went on to play 14 Tests. He was a member of three premiership winning teams at Scots College from 1966-68, then moved on to SCA Grade cricket, first with Waverley then later at Randwick where in the early 1970s he worked his way from the Second to First Grade as a wicketkeeper under skipper John Benaud, another Test player. After taking a break to concentrate on architectural studies, Craig continued his playing career, this time in Sydney's City and Suburban competition, until he retired in 1997. He moved to Tasmania in 2008 and after meeting several TCUSA members joined umpiring ranks in Hobart, thus following in the footsteps of his late father who stood for many years in SCA matches.
