ALLEN NEWMAN
Allen started his Tasmanian Umpiring Career in Launceston with the NTCUA. After a number of seasons he moved South and began umpiring with the TCUA as it was then.
Allen umpired at all levels to First Grade and developed a reputation for having a good rapport with players. He had a quick wit and there are many stories of his times under the white hat.
At Westbury one day the deep midwicket fielder kept appealing for LBW decisions. In one over he appealed four times and when Allen turned each down he demanded “Why Not!”
The next over from that end Allen moved towards deep midwicket rather than behind the stumps at the bowler’s end. The fielding captain asked him why he was going in that direction. Allen replied “It appears that you have a better view from out here!”
Much laughter from the fielding side and much less appealing from deep midwicket.
Another time at the NTCA Ground he accused a fellow umpire of eating the lunch his wife Margaret had prepared for him. Jack Hinds solved that problem by blocking the rat hole in the skirting board.
Allen umpired in finals in the lower grades and also in the old Country Week competition which was played in January each year between Country Associations. Allen also spent some seasons as a member of the Committee of TCUA/TCUSA.
On retirement from active Umpiring he was the Umpires’ Advisor for 1992/3 to 1995/6 seasons.
