Mike started playing cricket for the then Yeoman Emus Cricket Club in the North West Tasmania Cricket Association in 1983.
A batsman, he moved to Hobart in 1988 to study Mathematics and joined the Tasmania University Cricket Club (TUCC). Except for two seasons spent playing for the Barnt Green Cricket Club in the Birmingham Premier League in the U.K., he played for the TUCC, eventually representing the club in 207 First Grade matches. Those games included four Grand Finals for one Premiership plus seven Kookaburra Cup State finals for four wins; while off the field he was a committee member for twelve years, serving last seven as President, and made a Life Member in 2006.
He took up umpiring after retiring at the end of the 2006-07 season, and became a member of the State Panel two years later. In 2010, Mike was chosen to umpire in the men's Under 17 National Championships in Adelaide (January) and its Under 19 equivalent in Brisbane (December), plus a pre-season series in Darwin (August) involving the senior State squads from Tasmania, South Australia and Maharastra in India. He umpired in Fiji whilst on a family trip there in June 2011. Since then Mike has been chosen to stand in a number of Futures League and WNCL matches, another two Under-19 National Championships in Adelaide, a Futures League Twenty20 tournament in Melbourne, and in April 2012, a four-team Under-19 International series in Townsville.
Mike was a member of the Tasmanian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association management committee from 2011 until 2013 serving one year as Vice President and two as President.
He was a member of Cricket Australia’s emerging panel for the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 seasons standing in a pre-season series on the Sunshine Coast, in September 2012, involving the senior State squads from Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia and, in July 2013, a three-team Under-19 International series in Darwin involving Australia, India and New Zealand.
Mike was appointed to Cricket Australia’s National Panel in 2013 and has gone on to stand in 21 Sheffield Shield matches. He has been appointed to two WNCL finals and was appointed as third umpire for the 2017/2018 WBBL final.
