Ross has played, coached and umpired in Australia and Malaysia. His playing career commenced as a wicket keeper in suburban Melbourne but he soon became an opening bowler; winning numerous Association and club bowling awards and being selected in a number of representative teams. There were also stints at both Carlton and Northcote in the then Victorian Cricket Association, and as a member of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) he played for their sides in Victoria and NSW. Whilst in Malaysia with the RAAF he captained its Butterworth base side and played for the Penang Sports Club and for Penang in the Malaysian Cricket Association's state competition. He has umpired in Wagga Wagga, the NSW District Cricket Association, the Sydney Cricket Association and with the former Channel Cricket Association (CCA) in Tasmania, working as the CCA's Umpire's Advisor for several years prior to joining the TCUSA.
