Sam was a batsman who played for the Clarence District Cricket Club in Hobart for 12 years. During this time he was a member of five premiership sides ranging from Second Grade through to Under 16’s. He also coached a number of underage sides and the club awarded him the "Best Clubman" and "Players Merit" awards in 2000-01. Sam first became involved in umpiring at the age of 20 in 1998 after injuring his knee playing club cricket. After an initial season as an umpire in the late 1990s he went back to playing before returning to umpiring five years later, working his way up through all Cricket Tasmania Premier League competitions. He was then selected for a national men's Under 19 championship, and from there a Test and One Day International at Under 19 level, Womens National Cricket League games, numerous Futures League State Second XI fixtures, two Emerging Players Tournaments, then senior interstate Twenty20 and one-day games; along the way winning numerous TCUSA and State awards. He made his first class debut during the 2011-12 season, around the same time he was awarded a 2012 Australian Sports Commission National Officiating Scholarship, then in 2012 was appointed by Cricket Australia to its National Umpires Panel.
